Tennessee named Dickson silt loam its state soil, and the series was established in this county in 1923. It is good ground for pasture and tight ground for a drain field. Dickson soil carries a dense layer called a fragipan about 18 to 36 inches down. Water soaks through the topsoil at a normal rate, then slows to a crawl at that pan. A field set below it will hold water instead of shedding it.
That is why a drain field here can look fine in August and back up in February. Trenches often have to sit above the pan and spread wider than a flat lot would need. Dickson County also sits on the Western Highland Rim, so the hillsides run to chert and limestone. Wells and springs around town pull from the Warsaw Limestone underneath, so setbacks matter. Dickson County does not run its own septic program. The state handles it through TDEC, the way it does for most Tennessee counties. A new system needs a Septic System Construction Permit before anyone digs. Repairing a failed system takes a permit too. A state environmental scientist looks at the site and decides what the soil will hold. The state aims to finish that review inside ten days.
On some lots the state asks for a soil map from a licensed soil scientist. After the install, the state inspects the work before the system goes into service. Dickson County ties its building permits to that paperwork. The county wants a copy of the septic permit or proof of sewer before it issues one.
